Gamay Noir - Poor Man's Burgundy or Grape with Merit?

Gamay Noir - Poor Man's Burgundy or Grape with Merit?

 GAMAY NOIR

Poor Man's Burgundy or Grape with Merit?

By Allison Vidug

At a recent staff tasting at The Shore Club, we explored our collection of Gamay Noir.  To understand Gamay Noir it is important to understand its home land, Beaujolais.  Beaujolais is a grape growing area in the south of Burgundy, just north of the city of Lyon.  It is here on sandy soils that basic Beaujolais is made for everyday sipping.  But in the North of Burgundy, there are ten Crus.  Crus are growing regions recognized for individuality of flavour giving the wines a sense of place ...

A Cru in the Languedoc

A Cru in the Languedoc

A Cru in the Languedoc
by Allison Vidug

Pic Saint Loup is a mountain that juts out of the landscape in the Languedoc, a region located in the southwest of France.  Its presence is dramatic.   Not only is it beautiful, but there are some special attributes to the region that give the wines distinction.  These factors have elevated the wines from Pic Saint Loup to their own AOC status amongst the other wines from the Languedoc.  Here’s what makes the wines from Pic Saint Loup stand out in the Languedoc.

The warm Mediterranean climate provides hours of sunlight for ...

Malivoire's Melon

Malivoire's Melon

WRITTEN BY ALLISON VIDUG, SOMMELIER AT THE SHORE CLUB'S TORONTO LOCATION

Malivoire’s Melon is a sure sign of spring!  This refreshing unoaked white wine is released in just in time for a fresh new season.   This unfamiliar grape is a rarity in Canada because its homeland is in a small region in France.  So, first a little background on the classic.

Melon has a complicated story, which results in a perfectly simple wine destined for seafood.  To begin, its full name is Melon de Bourgogne.  This makes its location unclear, as it is grown in the Loire Valley ...

Spring is in the Air

Spring is in the Air

By Chef Jason Groulx

The ground is still wet from the melting drifts of snow but the smell of spring is definitely in the air!  Thus it's no surprise that our Chefs in The shore Club kitchen are very excited at the sight of spring and the fresh seasonal ingredients to come.   During the spring months, we are showcasing spring bok choy as our seasonal vegetable option.

MAPLE SYRUP

Maple syrup will be in full swing at the sugar bush, which gives us Chefs the opportunity to showcase a special dish we hold close to our roots. Our Maple ...

Biodynamic Syrah from Oregon

By Allison Vidug

2012 Cowhorn Syrah, Applegate Valley, US

Syrah is not a grape associated with the state of Oregon, but that is exactly where the Applegate Valley is located. Contrary to the cool maritime climate of the well know Willamette Valley, which is known for producing fine examples of pinot noir, Applegate Valley is located in the sunny south interior close to the state of California, where the warm climate allows ripening of big red grape varieties, such as Syrah.

Cowhorn is a small 117-acre winery.   They have chosen to plant traditional grape varieties from ...
